The Department for Levelling Up, Housing and Communities (DLUHC) has updated its guidance for tenants, landlords and local authorities on electrical safety standards in the private rented sector in England.

Under the Electrical Safety Standards in the Private Rented Sector (England) Regulations 2020, landlords of a rented property are required to have the property electrics checked at least every five years by a properly qualified person.

The guidance for tenants provides information on issues such as what is covered by the regulations, how inspections take place and what to do if you are worried about your property as well as several general FAQs.

The guidance for landlords covers how to properly comply with the regulations, the properties which the regulations apply to and the standards which a landlord must abide by when complying.

The guidance for local authorities addresses enforcement of the regulations, remedial action where a landlord has not complied, financial penalties for non-compliance and appeals by landlords against remedial action and penalties.
